(Español abajo)

ICESI University in Cali, Colombia announced that it will be hosting a free day-long course on cannabis science for indigenous communities that have been historically discriminated. The course by Dr. Yesid A. Ramirez (Member of the SCC LATAM chapter) will give a general overview of the fundamentals of cannabis therapeutics, laboratory standardization, and other key information to encourage participation in the local cannabis market.

In the span of a decade, the rediscovered paradigm of cannabis as medicine has quickly become an essential component of the modern health industry. Due to its volcanic soil and isothermal climate, Colombia has a unique competitive advantage and can transform into a world leader in the cannabis industry. Thanks to the indigenous community’s historical ties to medicinal plants and their vast experience in cultivation, they are key players in the growing development of the cannabis industry in the country.

With this in mind, the University of ICESI Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Pharmaceutical Science Department is collaborating with the Society of Cannabis Clinicians to invite members of the indigenous communities of Colombia to participate in this special event. The goal is to provide these historically discriminated communities with the scientific framework to enable them to join the legal medical cannabis market.

Key themes of the course:

  • History and ancient use of cannabis
  • Pharmacological fundamentals and therapeutic applications
  • Genetic adaptability of cannabis and hemp: possible industrial uses
  • Quality control and legal framework of the legal cannabis market
  • Live demonstration: testing cannabinoid concentration in cannabis flowers via liquid chromatography
