SUMMARY:Premier Screening of "Synergy": 1st documentary on the Science of Cannabis in Perú
DESCRIPTION:9am PDT /11am Peru/6pm CEST \nJoin the Society of Cannabis Clinicians for the English language premier of the first Peruvian documentary examining the science of cannabis. “Synergy” follows SCC Latin American Chapter member Dr. Max Alzamora and his work with cancer patients in Peru. The documentary highlights the potential benefits of cannabis in oncology\, the long regulatory process in the country\, and future aspirations to improve access to medical cannabis. \nAccording to the Center of Cannabis Studies in Peru\, cannabis has the potential to benefit around seven million people throughout the country. However\, only around 10\,000 patients are registered in the national data\, accounting for less than 1% of the population. The documentary acts as a way to help share knowledge about the benefits of cannabis medicine and encourage more research and compassionate laws for the patients of Peru. \nIn this one-time-only opportunity\, the SCC will present Synergy with its subtitles in English for the first time. The event will start with an introduction from Dr. Alzamora discussing the Peruvian experience of cannabis in clinical practice and why he decided to do the documentary. This will be followed by the documentary screening\, with time at the end for questions and answers. The event is free and open to the public. Sign up via the link below and watch the trailer here. \n  \nRSVP >>

SUMMARY:International Veterinary Cannabis Roundtable Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Legal Environment & Challenges Around the Globe\nHost: The SCC International Veterinary Cannabis Alliance\nConfirmed Panel Speakers: \n\nDr. Gary Richter (The Veterinary Cannabis Society – USA)\nDr. Patti Mayfield (The Veterinary Cannabis Society – USA)\nDr. Santiago Acosta (Asociación de Medicina Veterinaria Cannabinoide – LATAM)\nDr. Paula Lezcano (Asociación de Medicina Veterinaria Cannabinoide – LATAM)\nDr. Sarah Silcox (Canadian Association of Veterinary Cannabinoid Medicine)\n\nEvent Description:\nAs medicinal cannabis gains popularity and acceptance worldwide\, interest amongst the veterinary professional and pet loving communities is also increasing at an exponential rate. The newly emerging discipline of veterinary cannabis medicine is rapidly growing while traditional higher learning institutions and scientific research communities are struggling to keep up. This gap in education and scientific evidence\, combined with the slow-moving wheels of governmental regulation\, have created a field that is extremely confusing and challenging to navigate. Therefore\, in order to assist veterinary practitioners around the world\, the newly formed International Veterinary Cannabis Alliance is embarking on a series of roundtable discussions to help fill the current gaps in knowledge and expand our collective wisdom. \nThis series will feature internationally recognized veterinary cannabis experts and pioneers from around the globe who will address the various issues the profession is facing in their respective countries. Through solution-oriented discussions\, we aim to share best practices and tools for advancing and defending veterinarians’ rights to discuss cannabis medicine as a treatment option. \nWe will explore various topics including: \n\nNavigating legal challenges\nProduct quality concerns\nResearch studies and clinical trials\nIndividual case reports\nThe nuances of implementing cannabis in practice\nWhat the future holds for veterinary cannabis medicine\nAnd more.\n\nThis first web-based roundtable discussion will feature an international panel of experts who will address the current legal environment surrounding cannabis for veterinarians throughout the world. They will also explore the ramifications of integrating medical cannabis into the practice of veterinary medicine. \nJoin us as we share knowledge\, insight\, and valuable experience in what promises to be an enlightening and informative panel discussion. This inaugural event is free and open to all. \nRSVP >>

SUMMARY:SCC Quarterly Meeting: Dr. Michelle Sexton on Cannabis and Epigenetics in Pain and Immunocompetence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our quarterly meeting\, available to all SCC members. Dr. Michelle Sexton is the featured speaker who will discuss “Cannabis and Epigenetics in Pain and Immunocompetence” \nThe meeting is remote and available to all SCC members. Members can log in to the membership portal for instructions on how to register. \nREGISTRATION & LOGIN >> \nFormal abstract of the data that will be presented:\nBackground: Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 adults and current pharmacologic therapies are often falling short of adequate pain control. The transition from acute to chronic pain involves many complex physiologic interactions spanning the endocrine\, central and peripheral nervous and immune systems. The endocannabinoid system is expressed across these systems and represents a unifying system that ties these components to one another. The neuroimmune reflex has been implicated in the generation of chronic pain\, and to explore whether elements in this reflex arc are modulated in patients with chronic pain\, we used a systems biology approach. \nMethods: A network-based approach using whole peripheral blood gene expression was employed for mapping the expression of genes in the endocannabinoidome\, inflammatory markers and neurotransmitters. Blood from patients with pain (PP) and healthy subjects (HS)\, stratified by cannabis and opioid use\, was used to compare transcriptomes (the sum total of all the messenger RNA molecules expressed from all genes) between PP and HS. We analyzed gene expression for identification of genes differentially expressed in pain pathophysiology\, and/or by pharmacologic intervention. \nResults: Our analysis of this pilot data found no significant differentially expressed genes in the endocannabinoidome\, immune markers associated with chronic pain or neurotransmitters that may be related to endocannabinoid system function. There were some interesting ‘trends’. \nConclusion: Total RNA from subjects with chronic pain\, opioid use\, cannabis use or non-response to opioids or cannabis for pain treatment may not serve as a proxy for tissue-specific changes. So these lack of transcriptomic data may not allow for global changes or differentially expressed genes in tissues of interest related to chronic neuropathic pain\, such as the dorsal root ganglia\, glia cells or brain. However given that the CNS communicates with the periphery by several means\, the ability for the periphery to serve as a ‘mirror’ of the brain needs further investigation. \nBio for Dr. Michelle Sexton\nDr. Sexton is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at UCSD in the Department of Anesthesiology. She graduated from Bastyr University in 2008 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington\, where she formally studied the endocannabinoid system for 6 years. Her NIH-funded pre-doctoral and postdoctoral research on the topic of cannabinoids and their roles in neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration investigated cannabis use and impact on inflammatory markers. She has continued her research into health effects of cannabis at UCSD via survey data and clinical studies. Prior to medical school\, Michelle was a midwife and herbalist for 15 years. \nDr. Sexton has presented her research internationally and published 18 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Sexton’s clinical practice\, research and teaching focus on the endocannabinoid system and roles for integrative medicine\, including cannabis\, to treat a range of conditions\, across the lifespan. She is a member of the International Cannabinoid Research Society\, the International Association of Cannabinoid Medicine the American and California Associations of Naturopathic Doctors and the Society of Cannabis Clinicians. She maintains a private medical practice in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego\, CA and at UCSD. When not caring for patients or pursuing research activities\, you can find her in the garden\, paying music\, playing with grandchildren\, swimming or riding her bike to the beach for a surf session! \n  \nREGISTRATION & LOGIN >>
