Contact us here. \nLearn more about SCC membership options. \n  \nREGISTRATION >> \n  \nDylan Zylla\, MD is a hematologist/oncologist working to answer key questions in clinical oncology and improve pain and symptom management among patients with cancer. He integrates research into his clinical practice with protected research time and access to an institution with a strong reputation in quantitative\, qualitative and clinical research. He is a site principal investigator on multiple industry-sponsored oncology clinical trials. His projects focus on cancer pain\, the mu-opioid receptor\, and novel ways to treat pain. He was a key member of the Minnesota Community Measurement’s work group that developed quality measures for cancer symptom control using patient-reported outcomes (PROs)\, and he collaborates with national leaders on integrating electronic PROs into cancer care. \nSince 2016\, Dr. Zylla has spearheaded large-scale efforts to address how cannabis impacts the lives of patients with cancer. He led the Cannabis in Cancer (CanCan) study which randomized patients with metastatic cancers to receive early vs delayed cannabis to treat symptoms. SUMMARY:Special Edition of Journal Club: Dr. Ethan Russo & Nishi Whiteley on Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:9-10am PST / 11am-1pm Colombia / 12-1pm EST / 5-6pm UK \nPresenters: \n\nEthan Russo\nNishi Whiteley\n\n(read their bios below) \nTopic: \nCannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: An Emerging Public Health Problem with a Genetic Basis \nArticle: \nCannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Survey and Genomic Investigation (Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research\, 2021) \nOverview \nIs cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) associated with genetic mutations that might explain its unusual pathophysiology\, symptoms\, and signs? This topic is what Ethan Russo\, MD and Nishi Whiteley will be discussing in this special edition of Journal Club on August 20th. Their presentation will center around the findings\, implications\, and what the research illuminates about the daily life\, habits and susceptibilities of CHS patients based on their recent paper “Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Survey and Genomic Investigation”. This event marks the first time that Dr. Russo and Nishi Whiteley will be presenting their findings to a physicians’ group. \nThe largest survey of CHS to date (205 CHS patients plus 54 controls after screening) was conducted by Dr. Russo and colleagues that confirmed clinical patterns of nausea\, vomiting\, abdominal pain\, and hot water bathing behavior associated with chronic high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure. Genomic testing in 28 CHS patients with firm diagnosis and ongoing associated symptoms vs. 12 controls who used cannabis but did not display symptoms and signs revealed five statistically significant mutations affecting TRPV1\, CYP2C9 coding the catabolic enzyme of THC\, DRD2 and COMT\, two genes affecting dopaminergic function\, and ABCA1\, the ATP-binding cassette transporter affecting cholesterol efflux. \nMeaning: These results establish a genetic etiology of susceptibility to development of CHS with high level THC exposure\, elucidate the associated pathologies of CHS\, and may represent a practical screening device that could point to more effective therapeutic interventions. Have the opportunity to ask questions and delve into the research with the authors of this exciting new research paper. \nThe event is FREE for SCC members. $10 for non members. \n  \nREGISTER >> \n  \n \nEthan Russo\, MD is a board-certified neurologist\, psychopharmacology researcher\, and author. SUMMARY:Premier Screening of "Synergy": 1st documentary on the Science of Cannabis in Perú
DESCRIPTION:9am PDT /11am Peru/6pm CEST \nJoin the Society of Cannabis Clinicians for the English language premier of the first Peruvian documentary examining the science of cannabis. “Synergy” follows SCC Latin American Chapter member Dr. Max Alzamora and his work with cancer patients in Peru. The documentary highlights the potential benefits of cannabis in oncology\, the long regulatory process in the country\, and future aspirations to improve access to medical cannabis. \nAccording to the Center of Cannabis Studies in Peru\, cannabis has the potential to benefit around seven million people throughout the country. However\, only around 10\,000 patients are registered in the national data\, accounting for less than 1% of the population. The documentary acts as a way to help share knowledge about the benefits of cannabis medicine and encourage more research and compassionate laws for the patients of Peru. \nIn this one-time-only opportunity\, the SCC will present Synergy with its subtitles in English for the first time. The event will start with an introduction from Dr. Alzamora discussing the Peruvian experience of cannabis in clinical practice and why he decided to do the documentary. This will be followed by the documentary screening\, with time at the end for questions and answers. The event is free and open to the public.
