SUMMARY:Monthly Journal Club: Dr. Josh Kaplan on CBD Exposure and Behavioral Changes in Mice
DESCRIPTION:9-10am PDT / 11am-1pm Colombia / 12-1pm EST / 5-6pm UK \nThe SCC Journal Club meets monthly the first Friday of every month. Presentations will focus on a variety of articles and perspectives related to cannabis medicine\, including but not limited to clinically-relevant articles and research methodology-focused papers. This month’s installment will hear Dr. Josh Kaplan discuss a paper on adolescent CBD exposure in mice not having substantive negative impacts on a range of behaviors in adulthood. It may also improve the rate of learning under certain conditions. \nPresenter:\nDr. Josh Kaplan \nArticle to be Discussed:\n\nCannabidiol Exposure During the Mouse Adolescent Period Is Without Harmful Behavioral Effects on Locomotor Activity\, Anxiety\, and Spatial Memory\n\nFREE for SCC members. $10 for non members.  \nWant to sign up to present an article? Contact us here. \nLearn more about SCC membership options. \n  \nREGISTRATION >> \n  \nDr. Josh Kaplan Josh Kaplan earned his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience in 2015 from Oregon Health & Science University and then joined the University of Washington for two postdoctoral fellowships where he trained in cannabinoid pharmacology. His work has contributed towards our understanding of the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids and the body’s endocannabinoid system. Dr. Kaplan’s research was instrumental in demonstrating the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) as a monotherapy in treating medically-refractory seizures and improving autism-like social interaction deficits using pre-clinical genetic models of disease. Further\, he utilized his expertise in electrophysiology and pharmacological techniques to demonstrate a significant non-endocannabinoid mechanism-of-action by which CBD achieves its therapeutic relevance. His later studies focused on the therapeutic utility of enhancing endocannabinoid function and the relevant interactions with other inhibitory systems in the brain. \nDr. Kaplan is currently an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at Western Washington University in Bellingham\, WA\, where he trains undergraduate and graduate students in his cannabis research lab. By utilizing animal behavioral\, molecular\, pharmacological\, and electrophysiological techniques\, the Kaplan lab is working to identify ways of improving the plant’s therapeutic benefits and safety across a range of conditions. Their aim is to identify optimized cannabinoid and terpene compositions that extend the therapeutic dosing range while bolstering efficacy and limiting adverse effects. \nBeyond the lab\, Dr. Kaplan is a devoted mentor\, educator\, and science communicator. He has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed journals\, book chapters\, as well as written for websites and magazines including High Times\, Cannabis and Tech Today\, and Leafly. He’s also spoken internationally on cannabis science for all types of audience and consulted for documentaries and popular science books. He was included in High Times’ 100 Most Influential People in Cannabis in 2018.

SUMMARY:Special Edition of Journal Club: Dr. Ethan Russo & Nishi Whiteley on Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:9-10am PST / 11am-1pm Colombia / 12-1pm EST / 5-6pm UK \nPresenters: \n\nEthan Russo\nNishi Whiteley\n\n(read their bios below) \nTopic: \nCannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome: An Emerging Public Health Problem with a Genetic Basis \nArticle: \nCannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Survey and Genomic Investigation (Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research\, 2021) \nOverview \nIs cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) associated with genetic mutations that might explain its unusual pathophysiology\, symptoms\, and signs? This topic is what Ethan Russo\, MD and Nishi Whiteley will be discussing in this special edition of Journal Club on August 20th. Their presentation will center around the findings\, implications\, and what the research illuminates about the daily life\, habits and susceptibilities of CHS patients based on their recent paper “Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Survey and Genomic Investigation”. This event marks the first time that Dr. Russo and Nishi Whiteley will be presenting their findings to a physicians’ group. \nThe largest survey of CHS to date (205 CHS patients plus 54 controls after screening) was conducted by Dr. Russo and colleagues that confirmed clinical patterns of nausea\, vomiting\, abdominal pain\, and hot water bathing behavior associated with chronic high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure. Genomic testing in 28 CHS patients with firm diagnosis and ongoing associated symptoms vs. 12 controls who used cannabis but did not display symptoms and signs revealed five statistically significant mutations affecting TRPV1\, CYP2C9 coding the catabolic enzyme of THC\, DRD2 and COMT\, two genes affecting dopaminergic function\, and ABCA1\, the ATP-binding cassette transporter affecting cholesterol efflux. \nMeaning: These results establish a genetic etiology of susceptibility to development of CHS with high level THC exposure\, elucidate the associated pathologies of CHS\, and may represent a practical screening device that could point to more effective therapeutic interventions. Have the opportunity to ask questions and delve into the research with the authors of this exciting new research paper. \nThe event is FREE for SCC members. $10 for non members. \n  \nREGISTER >> \n  \n \nEthan Russo\, MD is a board-certified neurologist\, psychopharmacology researcher\, and author.
