SUMMARY:Book Launch with Peter Grinspoon\, MD -- Seeing through the Smoke: A Cannabis Specialist Untangles the Truth about Marijuana
DESCRIPTION:This edition of the SCC / Csequence Journal Club will feature Peter Grinspoon\, MD as he discusses his new book (available on April 20\, 2023). \nYou can pre-order the book here. \nDescription: \nDepending on which doctor you speak with\, or which websites you read\, cannabis could be an appealing\, low-risk medicine – even an aid to wellness – or an insidiously addictive drug rotting the brains of our youth. This dissonance confuses young people\, distressed patients\, and paralyzes politicians\, all while inviting dubious sources of information and resulting in uninformed choices\, enhanced polarization\, and a fragmented national policy. \nSeeing Through the Smoke is an unflinching examination at the grossly misunderstood drug that uses data-driven medical science and a critical historical perspective to reveal the truth behind cannabis. In this balanced and measured investigation\, Cannabis specialist and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School Dr. Peter Grinspoon untangles the reality behind cannabis\, revealing how we ended up with radically divergent understandings of the drug and pointing a way toward a middle ground that we can all share. \nMoving through an illuminating tour of the social history and the medical science behind cannabis\, Grinspoon unpacks the layers of disinformation left by a sordid history of government propaganda\, racial suppression\, and indifference from the medical community to answer questions like: \n\nIs cannabis addictive?\nWhat are its best-established medical uses?\nCan cannabis help cure cancer?\nHow does cannabis affect memory?\nHow dangerous is cannabis for teens?\nIs cannabis a safer treatment for ADHD and PTSD?\nWhat exactly is CBD and how is it different from marijuana?\nWhat are the most concerning side effects?\n\nBy focusing on the most critical purported harms—driving\, pregnancy\, addictiveness\, memory—and by focusing on the most commonly cited medical benefits—relieving chronic pain\, sleep\, anxiety\, PTSD\, autism\, and cancer—Seeing Through the Smoke will help patients\, parents\, doctors\, health experts\, regulators\, and politicians move beyond biased perceptions and arrive at a shared reality towards cannabis. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Quarterly Meeting: Featuring Igor Grant\, MD\, FRCP(C)
DESCRIPTION:Description\nIgor Grant\, M.D.\, F.R.C.P. (C) \nDistinguished Professor\, UC San Diego\, Department of Psychiatry \nDirector\, Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research \nDr. Igor Grant is Distinguished Professor and director of the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Program and the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Grant served as Chair of the UCSD Department of Psychiatry from 2014-2019. He is a neuropsychiatrist who graduated from the University of British Columbia School of Medicine (1966)\, and received specialty training in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania (1967-1971)\, and additional training in neurology at the Institute of Neurology (Queen Square) (1980-1981)\, London\, U.K. Dr. Grant’s academic interests focus on the effects of various diseases on brain and behavior\, with an emphasis on translational studies in HIV\, and drugs of abuse. He has contributed to approximately 800 scholarly publications and is principal investigator of several NIH studies. \nSince 2000\, Dr. Grant has been Director of the State of California funded Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR). The Center was funded following passage of California Prop 215\, the “Compassionate Use Act” which envisioned providing patients under doctor supervision with access to medicinal cannabis in patients whose condition warranted it. California established the CMCR to develop a knowledge base concerning cannabis. \nHeadquartered at the University of California San Diego (UCSD)\, the Center has completed several studies on medical cannabis in relation to neuropathic pain and muscle spasticity in Multiple Sclerosis\, as well as cannabis and driving impairment. Results of the studies have been published in the scientific literature and are available at: http://www.cmcr.ucsd.edu/\, many found evidence of at least short term benefit of medicinal cannabis. \nCurrently the CMCR is conducting a number of studies on both therapeutic potentials (e.g.\, with pain\, autism\, anxiety\, metabolic syndrome\, and diabetes) and potential risks (e.g.\, automobile driving) of medicinal cannabis. Studies are beginning to explore modes of administration and specific cannabinoids (e.g.\, THC\, CBD). \nCMCR has been the source of authoritative information that is developing on medicinal cannabis and has consulted with the Legislature of the State of California\, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of California (Blue Ribbon Commission’s Regulatory & Tax Structure Working Group)\, and contributed to the recent National Academies report\, “The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research” (2017). \nRegister

SUMMARY:Canna Talk: Pharmacy Edition -- Featuring Codi Peterson\, PharmD\, MS
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Canna Talk: Pharmacy Edition” on December 7th as we hear from our special guest Codi Peterson\, PharmD\, MS. Dr. Peterson will discuss his background\, how he became involved in cannabis medicine\, and give the insider view on the two courses he developed as part of the new curriculum “Cannabis Pharmacy: The Modernization of a Novel Healthcare Industry.” This educational webinar series is free for all to attend. \nCannabis: A Rich History Clouded in Stigma\nThe journey of cannabis through the millennia is woven between stories of agriculture\, medicine\, spirituality\, and recreation. The pathway to modern-day reformation requires an understanding of how political agendas shaped cannabis into the polarizing topic it is today. This course addresses cannabis prohibition and how the subsequent War on Drugs has disproportionately affected BIPOC communities. Course participants will learn how the stigmatization of cannabis and its consumption continues to exist today as a multifaceted issue. \nThe Future of Cannabis Medicine\nThe future of cannabis and cannabinoid-based medicine is riddled with competing interests and powerhouse industries. Prohibition has led to difficulties studying the cannabis plant on both a molecular level as well as large scale clinical trials. The endocannabinoidome is an expanded scope of what science currently knows and the questions that still need to be resolved as we move forward. The future implications of this knowledge are boundless and have the potential to significantly influence our approach to medical practices. Course participants will gain an understanding of the relationship between varying cannabinoid activity and the endocannabinoid system (ECS)\, become familiar with the expanded scope of the endocannabinoidome (eCBome)\, and much more. \nEstablished cannabis pharmacists and clinicians as well as individuals new to the medical cannabis sphere are all invited to attend this conversation. This is a great platform for users who are enrolled in the Training Curriculum to ask follow-up questions that may have come up while they were taking the courses. Presentations will focus on a variety of articles and perspectives related to cannabis medicine\, including but not limited to clinically-relevant articles and research methodology-focused papers. This month’s installment will hear Dr. Josh Kaplan discuss a paper on adolescent CBD exposure in mice not having substantive negative impacts on a range of behaviors in adulthood. It may also improve the rate of learning under certain conditions. \nPresenter:\nDr. Josh Kaplan \nArticle to be Discussed:\n\nCannabidiol Exposure During the Mouse Adolescent Period Is Without Harmful Behavioral Effects on Locomotor Activity\, Anxiety\, and Spatial Memory\n\nFREE for SCC members. $10 for non members.  \nWant to sign up to present an article? Contact us here. \nLearn more about SCC membership options. \n  \nREGISTRATION >> \n  \nDr. Josh Kaplan Josh Kaplan earned his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience in 2015 from Oregon Health & Science University and then joined the University of Washington for two postdoctoral fellowships where he trained in cannabinoid pharmacology. His work has contributed towards our understanding of the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids and the body’s endocannabinoid system. Dr. Kaplan’s research was instrumental in demonstrating the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) as a monotherapy in treating medically-refractory seizures and improving autism-like social interaction deficits using pre-clinical genetic models of disease. Further\, he utilized his expertise in electrophysiology and pharmacological techniques to demonstrate a significant non-endocannabinoid mechanism-of-action by which CBD achieves its therapeutic relevance. His later studies focused on the therapeutic utility of enhancing endocannabinoid function and the relevant interactions with other inhibitory systems in the brain. \nDr. Kaplan is currently an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Neuroscience at Western Washington University in Bellingham\, WA\, where he trains undergraduate and graduate students in his cannabis research lab. By utilizing animal behavioral\, molecular\, pharmacological\, and electrophysiological techniques\, the Kaplan lab is working to identify ways of improving the plant’s therapeutic benefits and safety across a range of conditions. Their aim is to identify optimized cannabinoid and terpene compositions that extend the therapeutic dosing range while bolstering efficacy and limiting adverse effects. \nBeyond the lab\, Dr. Kaplan is a devoted mentor\, educator\, and science communicator. He has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed journals\, book chapters\, as well as written for websites and magazines including High Times\, Cannabis and Tech Today\, and Leafly. He’s also spoken internationally on cannabis science for all types of audience and consulted for documentaries and popular science books. He was included in High Times’ 100 Most Influential People in Cannabis in 2018.
