SUMMARY:CannaConnect: April Members Call (Hosted by Windi Muraszka)
DESCRIPTION:About\nWelcome to our new members-only series\, CannaConnect! \nJoin us for these monthly member connection calls to introduce yourself\, ask questions\, and discuss with other members. SCC Board Member\, Windi Muraszka\, will be hosting our April 2024 call! \nEach month will offer an interactive blend of networking\, clinical case discussions\, and the latest in cannabis news. Connect with fellow SCC members\, find or offer mentorship\, share insights on clinical practices\, and welcome new members to our thriving community. \nWindi Muraszka\, CNM\, NP\, MS\nWindi Muraszka graduated Hunter College of Nursing of the City University of New York in 1992 and began working in Manhattan’s Upper East Side as a labor and delivery nurse. She attended Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing deep in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky\, the birthplace of American Nurse-Midwifery. Her midwifery clinical training occurred at a Bronx Birthing Center\, a Manhattan Planned Parenthood clinic\, and at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. She then completed a Master’s Program at Stony Brook University of The State University of New York. Upon graduation\, she took a job at Wyckoff Height Medical Center\, a Brooklyn community hospital where she has welcomed babies since 1996. \nIn 2014 Windi worked in concert with several physicians to establish a visionary new type of private practice maternity care service. The Augury for Women’s Health and Midwifery was a true coupling of the science of medical-based maternity care with the humanistic centering of a midwifery approach. This amalgam of ancient knowledge and sacred midwifery lineage married quite well with a modern evidence-based approach to women’s health and wellness\, pregnancy\, birth\, and breastfeeding and has become an answer to the prayers of so many women and families. Windi has worked with thousands of women through the years\, catching over 2800 babies and now serving two full generations. \nWindi became intrigued with the healing and wellness-supporting properties of cannabis when several members of her close family and friend circle were diagnosed with cancer and auto-immune disorders. After completing the New York State training program for medical cannabis providers\, she decided to delve deeper into this field and matriculated in the first university program in the country offering professional medical cannabis training\, the University of Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Science and Technology Master’s program. \nWindi continues to serve the women and families of New York City in her role as midwife and nurse practitioner\, now offering medical cannabis as one of the many tools she uses in optimizing their health. She looks forward to continuing the vision of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians by focusing on matters highly pertinent to women’s health and the nurturing of the next generation. \nMust be a member to attend these monthly calls; you can learn more about joining here. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Journal Club: Dr. Joe D. Goldstrich on the Cannabis Cancer Connection
DESCRIPTION:This Journal Club series hosts monthly educational events where authors discuss their newly published scientific findings. Presentations will focus on a variety of articles and perspectives related to cannabis medicine\, including but not limited to clinically-relevant articles and research methodology-focused papers. \nThis month’s installment will hear Dr. Joe D. Goldstrich discuss a chapter from his new book\, The Cannabis Cancer Connection: “When To Think Twice about Using THC (for cancer).” \nWhen to Think Twice About Using THC\nEvery time I suggest a new therapeutic cannabinoid protocol for a specific tumor type\, a phrase from the Hippocratic Oath I took almost 60 years ago pops into my head; “I will follow that system of regimen which\, according to my ability and judgment\, I consider for the benefit of my patients\, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.” Abstaining from the deleterious and mischievous has come to be known as “first\, do no harm.” \nWhile the readers of this book can in no way be considered my patients\, the principle of doing no harm is always my primary concern. \nInformation on the Internet about the use of cannabis to treat cancer would leave patients to believe cannabis and THC are likely to be antineoplastic for any cancer. In my experience\, that may not be true.\nBecause of the absurd\, ridiculous\, and cruel Schedule I classification of cannabis\, there are no clinical trials documenting the benefits and/or potential harms of cannabis use in treating cancer. Without clinical trials\, patients and medical professionals are limited and forced to use the best research available\, preclinical research. Most preclinical research shows that cannabis acts as an effective antineoplastic agent\, and its use results in the death of cancer cells and the shrinkage of tumors.\nBut in the interim\, before the results of clinical trials\, it is imperative first to do no harm. \nIn this presentation we will take a closer look at: \n\nHPV-Related Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head & Neck (SCCHN)\nSquamous Cell Carcinoma of the Esophagus (SCCE)\nCancer of the Uterine Cervix\nAnal Cancer\nRenal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)\nHepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)\n\nExcerpted from The Cannabis Cancer Connection by Joe D. Goldstrich\, MD\, FACC \nJoe D Goldstrich\, MD\, FACC \nJoe D Goldstrich\, MD\, FACC grew up in Dallas\, Texas and graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. After working as a mathematician for the US Navy\, Dr. Goldstrich attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where as a senior medical student he was present in trauma room and participated in the futile attempt to save president John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963. \nHe subsequently became board-certified in Internal Medicine\, Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Lipidology. In 1978 Dr. Goldstrich met Nathan Pritikin\, the father of the Pritikin diet\, and became the chief cardiologist at the Pritikin clinic and later the medical director of the Pritikin program. \nHe practiced preventive cardiology and integrative medicine until his retirement in 2010. In 2013 he accepted a position at a clinic that provided medical cannabis recommendations in Oakland\, California. In 2014 he personally worked with approximately 3500 patients who used medical cannabis to treat their medical condition. From these patients\, he learned the beauty and efficacy of medical cannabis. During that time\, he saw a presentation by Mara Gordon that detailed shrinkage of brain tumors that could be attributed to cannabinoid therapy. At that moment he knew that treating cancer with cannabinoids would become his life’s work. \nDr. Goldstrich has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians since 2016. \nRecent Presentations \n\nPresentation: The Use of Medical Cannabis in the Treatment of PTSD\, University of Chicago Medicine\, Orlando\, Florida\, October 2021\nPresentation: Using Cannabis to Treat Cancer\, Santa Barbara Medical Cannabis Conference & Expo\, Santa Barbara\, CA\, May 2019\nModerated panel on Cannabis and Cancer\, CannMed 2018\, Los Angeles\, CA (24 October 2018) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK3fPS15-As\nPresentation: Unleashing the Full Potential of Cannabis’ Antineoplastic Benefits\, Reimagining the Concept of Full Extract\, Marijuana for Medical Professionals\, Denver\, CO (15 October 2018)\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Asia International Hemp Forum
DESCRIPTION:SCC Board Member\, Dr. Shiksha Gallow\, will be representing the Society of Cannabis Clinicians and sharing her clinical perspective at this international event. \nThe “Asia International HEMP Expo” is the first and only international event in Thailand for businesspeople and industrialists seeking information\, crucial benefits\, greater awareness and sustainable solutions for the future of hemp which has already been unlocked and legalized in Thailand. \nThailand holds the distinction of being the first country in Asia to legalize the use of hemp\, making it an attractive destination for investment in the hemp industry. Its prime location and favorable conditions for cultivation provide a strong foundation for entrepreneurs. The country’s notable governmental support has further solidified Thailand’s position as a pioneer nation in hemp planting and processing. As a result\, domestic entrepreneurs have been able to advance rapidly in both fiber and extract development. \nThe Thai Industrial Hemp Trade Association (TiHTA) serving as the official agency that collaborates with the government to formulate and implement policies related to hemp use\, has forged a partnership with the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center\, the most modern and newest convention center in Southeast Asia\, to organize the “Asia International Hemp Expo and Forum 2023”. The expo is scheduled to take place during 22-25 November 2023. \nThe “Asia International Hemp Expo” is the very first trade exhibition for hemp industry in Asia which is organized annually. In 2023\, this expo is the second edition which will showcase the latest in cutting-edge hemp technology\, materials and equipment for planting\, extracting and processing\, with the aim of facilitating the establishment of production bases in Thailand. In addition\, it will provide a valuable platform for comprehensive business negotiations among raw material suppliers and manufacturers of processed hemp products\, covering the entire supply chain from upstream to downstream as well as opportunities for export channels.” \nThe expo will focus on the following primary industries: medical supplies\, food and beverages\, cosmetics and spas\, fashion apparel\, composite products\, building materials (such as HEMP Crete)\, and other alternative materials. \nRegister
