SUMMARY:Exploring Analgesic Properties of Minor Cannabinoids & Terpenes
DESCRIPTION:NCCIH Virtual Workshop: Analgesic Properties of Minor Cannabinoids and Terpenes \n6:45am-12pm PST\, 9:45am-3pm EST\, 3:45 pm – 9pm CEST \nAbout this Event\nThe overall goals of this workshop are twofold— to convene principal investigators funded by NCCIH on the topic of the analgesic properties of minor cannabinoids and terpenes from natural products and the underlying mechanisms. The other is to discuss current research barriers and opportunities on this topic. This workshop is aligned with NCCIH’s mission to support research on the fundamental science\, safety\, and usefulness of complementary and integrative health approaches. Specifically\, minor cannabinoids and terpenes from natural products are part of complementary interventions supported by NCCIH. The workshop is also aligned with NCCIH’s strategic goals of advancing understanding of basic biological mechanisms of action of natural products and improving care for hard-to-manage symptoms\, such as pain. \nThis workshop will be livestreamed. Prior to the event\, a link to the videocast will be sent to those who have registered. \n  \nINFO & REGISTRATION >>

SUMMARY:SCC Quarterly Meeting with Ziva Cooper\, PhD: Human Laboratory Studies of Cannabis: Probing Current Trends
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our quarterly meeting\, available to all SCC members. Ziva Cooper\, PhD is the featured speaker who will discuss “Controlled Human Laboratory Studies of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Probing Current Trends in Medicinal Cannabis”. \nDr. Ziva Cooper is the Interim Director and Research Director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative in the Jane and Terry Semel Institute and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. Her research involves understanding variables that influence both the therapeutic potential and adverse effects of cannabis and cannabinoids. Dr. Cooper received her PhD from the University of Michigan in Biopsychology in 2007 in the field of preclinical psychopharmacology\, experience that informs her focus on translating preclinical studies of cannabinoids to the clinic using controlled human drug-administration studies. Current projects include understanding differences between men and women in their response to the pain-relieving effects of cannabis\, the potential for cannabis constituents to reduce reliance on opioids\, and therapeutic effects of cannabinoids in patient populations. Dr. Cooper served on the National Academies of Sciences Committee on the Health Effects of Cannabis that recently published a comprehensive report of the health effects of cannabis and cannabinoids. She is a Board Director for the College on Problems of Drug Dependence\, an Associate Editor of The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse\, and is on several Editorial Boards of journals including Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research and Neuropsychopharmacology. \nThe meeting is remote and available to all SCC members. Members can log in to the membership portal for instructions on how to join. \n  \nLOGIN >>

SUMMARY:SCC Quarterly Meeting: Cannabis in Network Pharmacology
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our quarterly meeting\, available to all SCC members. Connie McLaughlin-Miley\, PharmD is the featured speaker who will discuss Network Pharmacology and how cannabis may be used in this sphere. Network pharmacology is a discipline that is evolving to address the complexities of the human system’s response to the introduction of a food\, plant\, or pharmaceutical entity. The growing awareness and acknowledgment of the inadequacy of the one molecule/one effect model has ushered in the need for Network Pharmacology. Cannabis is an ideal candidate for characterization in this system\, with its array of constituents such as cannabinoids\, terpenes\, and flavonoids. \nSince 2014\, upon returning to her enduring interest in pharmacognosy\, Dr. McLaughlin-Miley\, as a clinician-researcher\, educator and patient advocate\, consults within the professional and patient communities to manage use of cannabinoids and other plant medicines. Typically\, through her work with patients\, across the spectrum of diseases as well as for general health and well-being\, will provide education and guidance throughout the course of their experience. Following the available literature and using an evidence-based approach\, she recommends cannabinoids and typically suggests appropriate formulations\, dosing and titration to address patient-specific needs in areas such as pain (opioid reduction and elimination)\, cancer and those issues related to chemotherapy and/or cancer experiences. \nDr. McLaughlin-Miley completed her Pharmacy education at the University of Michigan and a post-doctorate Fellowship in Health Economics and Outcomes Research with the University of South Carolina\, Columbia and Glaxo-Smith Kline. She also earned a Master’s in Business Administration\, focused in Health Policy\, from the University of California\, Irvine. For several years within the Bio-Pharmaceutical Industry\, her research was focused on clinical and quality-of-life issues and she has published across a variety of therapeutic areas including oncology\, pain and women’s health. \nThe meeting is remote and available to all SCC members. Members can log in to the membership portal for instructions on joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Medical cannabis models worldwide: what can we learn and avoid?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a solutions-oriented event that will give voice to various local and international participants in the field of medical cannabis. Representatives of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians will share their journey with representatives of the UPRC patient group\, doctors of the newly created Endocannabinology Clinical Society (SCE)\, with an introduction and moderation by ICEERS. This meetup will allow us to better understand the reality we face in our individual and collective contexts. We will discuss what types of legislation and political actions have (and haven’t) been effective in order to prevent the same mistakes from happening in the future. Participants in areas with longstanding medical cannabis laws can share their experience to encourage cannabis regulation to happen as soon as possible elsewhere. \nThe event is open to anyone who interested in exploring these topics in a community-driven discussion\, taking place at one of the epicenters of cannabis in Barcelona. The event will happen on Wednesday just before the city’s most important annual cannabis event\, Spannabis 2020. We will be raffling off 6 tickets to Spannabis for participants who register before March 6th. Don’t miss out! \nSign Up >>
